Conservation Authorities The Ministry of Regional Municipalities, Environment and Water resources (www.mrmewr.gov.om) is the principal authority for environmental protection and nature conservation. The office of the Adviser for Conservation of the Environment
(www.oryxoman.com) in the Diwan of Royal Court is responsible for a number of projects including the Arabian Oryx Project, Arabian Tahr Project and the Arabian Leopard Survey. Royal Decree 6/2003, issued on 8th January 2003, promulgated the Law on Nature Reserves and Wildlife Conservation.

Municipal Services

The Ministry is offering a number of municipal services for privatisation. Investors are being invited to bid for the management of local markets, public parks and children's playgrounds, as well as abattoirs and waste water treatment plants. Some municipal open land is also being offered to private investors for development.

Arab City Awards

In March 1998, it was announced that Sohar had won the Arab Cities Gold Cup award for the best urban landscaping, coming first out of 48 nominations from 29 cities in 14 Arab countries. Muscat came second in another class in the competition, winning the Silver Cup award for the most environmentally aware municipality. Muscat, Sohar and Salalah are not administered as regional municipalities under the Ministry. They are considered to be the responsibility of the Diwan of Royal Court and the Governorate of Dhofar respectively.
