Municipal Services
The Ministry is offering a number of municipal
services for privatisation. Investors are being
invited to bid for the management of local
markets, public parks and children's playgrounds,
as well as abattoirs and waste water treatment
plants. Some municipal open land is also being
offered to private investors for development.
Arab City Awards
In March 1998, it was announced that Sohar had
won the Arab Cities Gold Cup award for the best
urban landscaping, coming first out of 48
nominations from 29 cities in 14 Arab countries.
Muscat came second in another class in the
competition, winning the Silver Cup award for the
most environmentally aware municipality. Muscat,
Sohar and Salalah are not administered as regional
municipalities under the Ministry. They are
considered to be the responsibility of the Diwan
of Royal Court and the Governorate of Dhofar
respectively.
