Sports Events in 2009-2010
2nd Asian Beach Games
The greatest sports event in the Sultanate’s
history is due to take place between 8th and
16th December 2010 when the country hosts the
2nd Asian Beach Games under the slogan “Together
we shine”. With a total of eleven sports, the
games have adopted a logo that symbolises the
lofty
sails
of the Omani ships which used to ply the oceans.

The Tour of Oman 2010
is a monumental event organized by the Muscat
Municipality to celebrate the 40th year of the
blessed Renaissance.
It
also aimed to showcase Oman’s infrastructure and
tourist attractions to the world. The Tour draw
international attention and helped promote
foreign investment in Oman besides invigorating
tourism, trade and economic activity
the Tour of Oman covered different types of
terrain and tested the abilities and stamina of
the participants to the maximum.
The Tour of Oman is part of the ongoing attempt
to globalize cycling and it covered Muscat, Al
Batinah region, Al Dhakaliya region and Al
Dhahirah region. Hundreds and thousands of
spectators witnessed the Tour which covered a
total of 687 kms across the country. more

The Gulf Cup Championship
the Sultanate hosted The Gulf Cup Championship
in 2009, was an auspicious event for Omani
sports, particularly since Oman won the Gulf Cup
for the first time in their history
also
the handball and volleyball teams both came
second in the games that took place on its
sidelines. The volleyball team put in an
impressive performance in the Rashid
International Volleyball Championship in the
Emirate of Dubai in October 2009, deservedly

Sports achievements
• Oman has had a number of sporting successes in
recent years. After its national football team
won the 19th Gulf Cup championship it received
the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum ( the
Vice-President of the United Arab Emirates and
the Ruler of Dubai.) Creative Sports Award for
the best and most successful Arab sports team of
2009.
• The under-16s football team reached the final
of the Asian Nations Cup for 2010. It has
already won this championship twice – once in
1996 in Thailand and again in 2000 in Vietnam.
• In an unprecedented achievement.. Omani
Adventurer achieved Khalid Bin Sulaiman Siyabi
37-year-old, so climb Everest the highest peak
in the world at altitudes of 8848 meters above
sea level to become the first Omani to
accomplish this feat.
• Another intrepid adventurer, Nabil al Busaidi,
also scored a first when he became the first
Arab to reach the North Pole on foot in a
journey fraught with dangers.

A
number of titles were won at beach volleyball
events. The national beach volleyball A team won
the 8th Arab Men’s Championship, which was held
in Lebanon from 5th to 9th August, while the B
team came third. This team won the 12th Gulf
Championship, which was held in Saudi Arabia
from 11th to 13th November 2009, swapping places
with the A team, which came third.
• The swimming team won an impresive number of
medals at Gulf and Arab championship events.
• Making its debut appearance following the
inauguration of the Oman Diving Association last
year, the national diving team came second in
the Amsterdam International Open Championship in
the Netherlands.

• The national weight-lifting team won eighteen
medals in the 9th Gulf Co-operation Council
States’ Men’s Weight-lifting Championship in the
UAE, while the disabled weight-lifting team won
two silver medals in the West Asian States’
Weight-lifting Championship for the Disabled in
Khor Fakkan.
• The body-building team won several medals in
Gulf, Arab and Asian competitions and the
national athletics team won seven gold, twelve
silver and four bronze medals at the Asian
Athletics Championship in India.
• Omani teams and individuals performed well in
regional championships, winning medals in track
and field events, as well as tennis, shooting,
horsemanship, cricket, sailing and motor-car
racing. In sailing, pride of place should go to
the Omani sailor Muhsin al Busaidi who sailed
round the world in the boat “Musandam”. During a
voyage of some 76 days he covered a distance of
24,287 nautical miles (44,979 Kilometres). He
was the first Arab to sail round the world
non-stop.
• Over 61,000 youngsters took part in the 4th
Sports Summer, in which 400 sports centres
throughout the country offered them the
opportunity to take part in 42 different games
and sporting activities.
Sports News
The
Ministry of Sports Affairs is continuing to
develop the infrastructure for the country’s
sports centres and complexes. Recent additions
include the installation of an international
transmission centre at the Sultan Qaboos Sports
Complex in Bausher and a TV transmission at al
Sa’adah Sports Complex in Salalah. Improvement
work has also been carried out on the indoor
sports hall at the Sohar Sports Complex. New
administrative buildings have also been
constructed and maintenance and improvement
works have been carried out on a number of
clubs.
Al Musana’a Sports City:
The one-million square metre Al Musana’a Sports
City is the purpose built facility where the
Games will be held and is planned for completion
in July 2010. Located approximately 100km from
Muscat, the Sports City features Olympic-quality
sporting facilities, an Athletes' Village, Main
Media Centre and International Broadcasting
Centre, a four-star hotel, a 400-berth marina,
and range of restaurants and retail facilities.
